Volley, the iconic Australian brand, proudly announces its debut apparel collection, inspired by retro sportswear and created in consultation with Melbourne’s Ken Sakata of Front Office. The Court Classics collection drops online on Thursday, December 5, and follows the resounding success of last month’s Baseline sneaker launch. The apparel capsule arrives just in time for the ultimate leisure season—the annual Christmas break—and offers tennis-inspired casuals for everyday wear, just in time for the Australian tennis fever, January’s Australian Open.
In developing their first apparel range, Volley partnered with Sakata to answer a key question: “What is Australian sportswear?” The goal was to create a collection that felt authentically Australian and suited to the local climate. Sakata was tasked with infusing Volley’s heritage and retro aesthetic with a distinctly Australian twist.
Leveraging his garment research and development expertise, Sakata analysed international sportswear trends, examined how geography shapes design, and ideated what this debut apparel collection may look like. He and the team applied these insights to develop an apparel range honouring Volley’s unique Australian heritage while reimagining it for a new generation of fans. Hear from Ken directly here:
A certified medical surgeon-turned-menswear designer, Sakata gained widespread acclaim during the pandemic, amassing a loyal TikTok following for his innovative menswear concepts, passion for local manufacturing, and the creation—and subsequent merch launch—of his fictional Queensland Football Club. Known for his sharp critical eye and attention to detail, Sakata’s contributions to this collection include conceptual sketches and garment silhouettes that celebrate the nostalgic charm of retro Australiana.
The apparel collection coincides with the fourth drop of Volley's new Baseline sneaker, which is in a colourway that perfectly complements the collection.
With the momentum of a successful footwear launch and the unveiling of this promising apparel collection, Volley is poised to be a brand to watch in 2025. In a market saturated with homogenous sportswear, Volley is carving out its identity and inviting fans for the ride.
